Frequently Asked Questions
What is a molded case circuit breaker (MCCB)?
A molded case circuit breaker, or MCCB for short, provides short-circuit and overload protection for heavy loads such as those found in homes, villas, and motors.
Its maximum current carrying capacity ranges from 63 amps to several thousand amps.
Using an MCCB allows you to use electricity more safely.
Types of Molded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB)
Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) are divided into the following types:
Standard type (with overload and short-circuit protection only): Features basic thermal tripping (overload protection) and electromagnetic tripping (short-circuit protection) functions.
Selective type (with short-time delay protection): Based on the standard type, it adds a short-time delay tripping function, with adjustable delay time (e.g., 0.1-0.5 seconds).
Residual current protection type (with earth leakage protection, abbreviated as MCCB+RCD): Integrates the functions of both an MCCB and a Residual Current Device (RCD).
In addition to overload and short-circuit protection, it can detect residual current (e.g., electric shock, insulation damage) and trip quickly (usually ≤ 0.1 seconds).
Why You Need Our Molded Case Circuit Breaker ?
In all power distribution equipment, stable and reliable circuit protection is always a fundamental requirement – and our molded case circuit breakers (MCCBs) fully meet your electrical protection needs.
They feature high-strength, flame-retardant casings and high-temperature resistance, enabling them to quickly disconnect the circuit in the event of overload or short-circuit faults, effectively preventing equipment damage and safety accidents.
Our comprehensive product range covers various current ratings to meet the needs of diverse application scenarios.
What is the difference between MCB and Moulded case circuit breaker?
The main difference between miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) and molded case circuit breakers (MCCBs) lies in the amount of current they can handle.
Miniature circuit breakers are designed for end-users and are typically used to handle very small currents.
MCBs have a maximum rated current of 63 amperes, while MCCBs can handle much higher currents.
CNTN manufactures MCCBs with current ratings ranging from 63 amperes to a maximum of 800 amperes.
The Differences Between AC Circuit Breakers and DC Circuit Breakers
The main difference between AC molded case circuit breakers and DC molded case circuit breakers lies in the type of current they handle.
AC molded case circuit breakers are designed specifically for handling alternating current, while DC molded case circuit breakers are designed for handling direct current and are suitable for specific applications such as solar power, batteries, and traction systems.
The design and internal structure of these two types also differ. AC contactors utilize thermal-magnetic tripping, with a thermal element detecting overcurrent and a magnetic element detecting short circuits.
This dual protection mechanism ensures efficient and reliable operation of the electrical equipment. DC molded case circuit breakers, on the other hand, generally contain an electronic tripping mechanism.
This mechanism utilizes advanced electronic technology to provide precise overload and short-circuit protection in DC circuits.
Can AC MCCB be used for DC?
Why can’t AC molded case circuit breakers be used with DC power? The key lies in their insufficient arc extinguishing capability.
Imagine the electric arc as a “charged flame.” With AC current, the current “breaks and reconnects” itself, causing the flame to extinguish itself dozens of times per second.
Therefore, the arc extinguishing device in an AC circuit breaker can easily handle it. However, with DC current, the current is “continuously flowing,” and this “flame” doesn’t extinguish itself.
The arc extinguishing structure of an AC circuit breaker simply cannot suppress it. When the power is cut off, sparks will fly everywhere, potentially damaging the switch and even causing a dangerous situation.
What is a MCCB used for?
Molded case circuit breakers (MCCBs) are core protection and control devices in power distribution systems and electrical equipment, providing overload and short-circuit protection to electrical circuits, effectively ensuring the safe and stable operation of electrical circuits and equipment.
When should I use an MCCB?
These circuit breakers are used in applications requiring high rated current and high breaking capacity, typically in large commercial and industrial environments where high current and fault levels are expected.
They are mostly available in 3-pole and 4-pole configurations.
What certifications do our products have?
CNTN’s MCCB are certified with both CCC and CE certificates.
The CCC certificate is the strictest certification in China, guaranteeing the highest level of safety and minimizing the risk of fire and electric shock during use.
If you require other certifications, such as UL, CSA, UKCA, ETL, or RoHS, we can also provide them upon request. Please contact us for more information.
