How Does an Isolating Fuse Work?
The working principle of an isolating fuse relies on the thermal melting and breaking of its internal fuse element to achieve fault protection. It features an insulating housing, which prevents arc leakage when the fuse melts.
When a fault occurs in the circuit (e.g., short circuit or overload), the fuse element melts and breaks rapidly, forcing the circuit to disconnect. This effectively cuts off the fault and avoids potential risks.
It should be noted that once the fuse element breaks, it cannot be reused. To restore the protection function, a new fuse element must be replaced. After replacing the fuse element, the movable and fixed contacts need to be reclosed to restore circuit conduction.
In simple terms, an isolating fuse acts as a “conductor” during normal operation, a “pair of scissors” (to cut off faults) when a circuit fault occurs, and a “gate” (to isolate the circuit) during maintenance.
